Chapter 21 – Her Harem Rules

With each of us holding our tankard of foaming beer in one fist, Fredo and I stand and chat amongst the other outdoor drinkers under the fading sun. He tells me of his background as an orphan abandoned by his parents and his story is, I guess, in that way similar to Cass’s. And maybe even Angel’s too. Except that in Fredo’s case, he was raised by a female Mage.

Unfortunately for him (and maybe for us too) the Mage’s esoteric abilities were not passed to her adoptee.

Fredo recounts how he got started at the Mercenaries Guild. He cites his powerful build (relative to other Pentaurian males at least) as the main reason he specialized in the class of ‘Tank’, but he tells me he had ranged weapons skills training too before he specialized.

I tell him about my crossbow and the one lucky shot I had against some bandits that time Angel and I were ambushed while making love in a field. Plus the two other bows re looted from the bandits before we reached Underforge.

“Making love to Angel in a field,” he grins and wipes foam from around his mouth with a thick forearm, “Mmm, nice. So look, if you’re an early riser I could come around to Roger’s tomorrow before we leave. Before the Guide arrives. Assuming one can be found. I’ll show you some basics with your bow.”

“I’ll hold you to that,” I say and clunk my iron tankard against his.

“So you have a wife or girlfriend?” I ask him because I suspect he could have an interest in Angel. “Or a harem?”

“I have female friends,” he nods and drains his beer, “but I don’t want to be tied down to a single one. Way too many options in this life.”

“I know what you mean,” I say.

“I ended up somehow collecting several females over a period of months a year or two back,” he shakes his head then blows out his lips, “And believe me, once with a harem was enough for me.”

I laugh, but even though I know what he means, I’m committed to my particular ‘group’ of girls. I want to do whatever it takes to keep them happy and to make sure we stay together. Even as the party hopefully grows in number.

“So speaking of Harems,” I too drain the dregs from my tankard, “Should we make a move to the Harem Guild?”

“Unless you fancy another beer?” he holds up his mug, “Like you said, this could be the last time in a while.”

The air is still warm and the atmosphere so good here amongst boisterous other drinkers in this strange world, that against my better judgment, I agree. “I’m paying again though,” I say, “If you won’t accept coin for coming down into Nadir with us then ale is the least I can do.”

“I’m looking forward to visiting the cities’ underbelly again as an older more experienced fighter,” he laughs over his shoulder as he orders, “it’s been a while.
